Florida Homestead Exemption

Apply for your Homestead Exemption on the website for your property’s county appraisal district (links below). This webpage may not reflect the most recent appraisal district websites; please confirm accuracy of information using a search engine.

Typically, within four to six weeks of closing on a property, homeowners receive the original deed from their title company. With the deed for a primary residence, homeowners may file for a Homestead Exemption. The Homestead Exemption reduces the taxable value of a property by up to $50,000, and limits future annual increases in assessed value to 3% or less.

Please note: homeowners who sold their primary residence to purchase a new home in the prior two tax rolls may be eligible for portability. Portability allows homeowners to transfer some or all of the “Save Our Homes” benefit on a previous homestead to a newly established homestead.

File for the Homestead Exemption with the Florida County Appraisal District in which the primary residence resides. Policies and procedures vary by appraisal district; contact the county appraisal district for the latest information.

Reminder: Mortgage interest and certain loan costs may be tax deductible. Consult with a tax professional for more information.
